Fiestas Patrias Lakeside: How Lake Chapala Celebrates Mexican Independence Day
From dramatic airborne mishaps in Ajijic to sweet parades in Chapala, Mexican Independence Day week at Lake Chapala is a week long action-packed immersion into local tradition.
Before we jump into the local madness, let’s clear up one major misconception: No, Mexican Independence Day is NOT Cinco de Mayo!
Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican Army’s defeat of the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Independence Day, on the other hand, marks the anniversary of Father Miguel Hidalgo’s famous call to arms- the Grito de Dolores- in the early hours of September 16, 1810. It signaled the start of Mexico’s 11-year war for freedom from Spanish rule.

The Regata de Globos in Ajijic: Thrills, Beauty, and Flying Fire
The festivities kicked off the Saturday before Independence Day with one of Ajijic’s most famous and beloved traditions: the Regata de Globos (Paper Balloon Regatta).
Local teams spend months crafting massive, intricate tissue-paper hot-air balloons. Watching them launch into the sky against the backdrop of the mountains is breathtaking. However, this event always brings a healthy dose of raw excitement!
Sadly- or excitingly, depending on how fast you can run- many of the balloons caught fire almost immediately after lift-off. As the paper burned away, heavy metal spiral rings holding the balloons together came spiraling back down to earth. The crowd had to dodge and dash quickly to avoid getting scorched by the falling embers! It added a thrilling level of adrenaline to the event as literal fire rained down on the field.
Día del Charro Parade in Chapala
On Monday, we caught the Día del Charro parade in Chapala, honoring the region’s rich equestrian heritage. It was a charming procession, made all the more special by the youngest participants. The crowd couldn’t get enough of the adorable little boys in their crisp charro suits and tiny sombreros, paired with precious little girls wearing the most stunning, colorful traditional dresses.
Independence Day Eve: Greased Poles, Folklorico, and the Grito in Ajijic
On Independence Day, we headed to the Ajijic Plaza to catch the main festivities. We arrived just in time to watch the tail end of the traditional palo encebado (greased pole climb). Watching people slip, slide, and scramble to reach the prizes at the top of a slick pole is always a crowd favorite.
As night fell, the Ballet Folklórico dancers took the stage, sweeping the square with incredible energy, flowing skirts, and vibrant ribbons. They built the crowd’s energy right up to the main event: the ceremonial Grito de Independencia led from the plaza stage, followed by a fireworks display lighting up the night sky over the lake.

The next morning, we headed back into Chapala for the official September 16th parade. The streets were lined with locals cheering on marching bands and wave after wave of local schoolchildren dressed in uniform and traditional outfits.
Pueblo Parties and the Morning After
The celebrations didn’t stop there. The following weekend, our local pueblo of San Antonio Tlayacapan hosted its own community festivities. San Antonio brought out all the stops: live mariachi, booming banda music, another energetic Grito, local reinas (fiesta queens), and plenty of tequila flowing into the night. The local parade was the next morning, leaving me to wonder once again how this town parties until 4am, cleans up the streets, and is ready for a street parade by 9am!!

There is something deeply special about being in a place where you genuinely enjoy celebrating the country you live in and immersing yourself in such a rich, welcoming culture. Between the fiery sky spectacles and the warm village gatherings, Fiestas Patrias at Lake Chapala is a vivid reminder of why we love calling this region home.
