Two Days, Two Castles: Exploring Medieval Marvels in Southern France

Few places capture the imagination quite like the medieval castles of Southern France. Over two days, we explored two remarkable sites—each with its own unique history and breathtaking scenery.

Day One: Cité de Carcassonne – A Medieval Wonder

Cité de Carcassonne, a fairytale fortress with towering walls and cobbled streets, is one of the most well-preserved walled cities in Europe. With its double ring of ramparts, 52 watchtowers, and imposing gates, it’s no wonder that Carcassonne served as a filming location for Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991).

The fortress dates back to Roman times, though its most defining features were built in the 12th and 13th centuries. Its strategic location made it a key stronghold during the Cathar Crusades, when the Catholic Church sought to eliminate the Cathar sect in the region.

Day Two: Hiking to Les Quatre Châteaux de Lastours

On day two, we embarked on a stunning hike through the ruins of Les Quatre Châteaux de Lastours, accompanied by our four-legged companion, Guinness. These four castle ruins rise dramatically from the rocky cliffs above the Orbiel River. Unlike the restored grandeur of Carcassonne, Lastours offers a wilder, more atmospheric experience, with sweeping views of the Pyrenees and the surrounding valley.

Built between the 11th and 13th centuries, these castles were also deeply entwined with the history of the Cathars, serving as a refuge during the brutal Albigensian Crusade. After the fall of the Cathars, the castles remained in use before eventually falling into ruin. Today, their weathered stone walls stand as a haunting reminder of the region’s turbulent past.

The contrast between the preserved grandeur of Carcassonne and the wild beauty of Lastours offered a perfect balance, making this two-day castle adventure one to remember.
