The Carnival in Limoux (Carnaval de Limoux) is an absolute delight! We attended the 4:30 PM event, one of three daily performances—morning, afternoon, and evening. The energy in the square was contagious as two different carnival groups took turns parading through the streets, each with its own lively band.
White confetti rained down constantly, covering the streets in a festive layer. One carnival group was hilariously dressed as old people. The other group wore masks and vibrant costumes, bringing a splash of color and mystery to the festivities.
Limoux’s carnival tradition dates back to the 16th century and is considered one of the longest-running carnivals in the world. Originating from the local millers, who would celebrate with music and performances after paying their dues to the Dominican friars, it has since evolved into a months-long event. Unlike many other carnivals that are concentrated into a few days, Limoux’s celebrations stretch from January to March.
The square itself is a hub of activity, with a vintage carousel adding to the old-world magic. Limoux knows how to celebrate, and we loved being part of the tradition.
