My 50th birthday week was everything I hoped it would be — filled with dear friends, unforgettable meals, art, celebrations, and so much joy. The moment our friends Kathryn and Josh landed in Guadalajara, the week officially began, and it only got better from there.
While waiting for them at our hotel, we witnessed the sweetest moment: a couple celebrating their first anniversary with a private mariachi performance in the courtyard. Their joy, the music, the emotion — I found myself crying right along with them. It was a beautiful way to ease into a week surrounded by people I love.
We made Tlaquepaque our home base for the first few days, and I was thrilled that the Día de Muertos decorations were still on display. Golden marigolds, colorful papel picado, and elaborate altars lined the streets — a perfect backdrop to kick off the celebrations with Kathryn and Josh.
One of our first standout meals was at La Mata Tinta, where we ate under a canopy of marigolds in their atmospheric courtyard.
Our time in Tlaquepaque and Guadalajara was a blend of art, culture, and delicious food. We visited the Sergio Bustamante Gallery, the Museum of National Ceramics, and the Cabañas Museum. Between museums, we wandered through local markets, tasted the best tortas at La Torta Loca, and discovered an unbelievably talented young street performer. And in a moment of Mexican magic, Kathryn got to meet Dr. Simi — a milestone moment!
Returning to Lake Chapala, we eased into the slower pace of the lake and shared our favorite traditions with our friends. Kathryn and Josh took in the San Antonio malecón sunset with us and met a few of the warm locals who always make us feel at home.
We introduced them to our beloved Venezuelan spot, El Chef de la Nena, where the owners welcomed them with the same kindness they always show us. The night continued at our favorite hangout, Bar Zona 503, where they met more friends and joined the fun that makes this area so special.
The following days were filled with sunshine and relaxed exploration as we walked the Chapala and Ajijic malecóns, admired the street art in Ajijic, and enjoyed the perfect weather. We also spent time at the Feria Maestros del Arte, a remarkable exhibition featuring amazing artisans from across Mexico.
Saturday marked the start of the official birthday celebrations. We gathered for an incredible seafood dinner at La Paceña. But the real highlight came afterward — a dance party that Joe planned, featuring my favorite local DJ, Johnny Guzmán. I danced so much I actually got blisters, and it was perfect. The energy, the music, the laughter, and having Kathryn and Josh there made the night feel completely magical. I truly felt celebrated.
We wrapped up the week with a blissfully relaxing day at Monte Coxala Spa, soaking in the warm pools, breathing in the beauty around us, and enjoying our final hours together under the sun.
This birthday week will stay with me forever. I’m so grateful to Kathryn and Josh for traveling to be with me, to Joe for making every day special, to the friends here who showed up with so much love, and to the many friends far away who sent messages.
As I step into a new decade, I feel grounded, joyful, and exactly where I’m meant to be — ready for every adventure ahead.
